
Goa Lawah or Bat Cave is one of favorite places of interest
in Bali and it is located near of hilly bank so it is called reef of Middle hill.
There is a nature cave dwelt by thousands of tail bat located at north side
from Jeroan/center of Goa Lawah Temple . Pursuant to the papyrus of Dwi Jendra
Tattwa, the Goa Lawah's name is Goa Lelawah, the name which is given by
Danghyang Nirartha (a priest overspread the Hindu teaching in Bali) when he
stoped in this place on his Tirtha Yatra trips. He arrived at a cave with a lot
of bats were hang on and its unbroken voice clamor as hymn to add the beauty of
the cave. "Bat" means "Lelawah" whereas "Cave" means "Goa" in Balinese, therefore this cave has been called as
”Goa Lawah” or “Bat Cave Temple”. Upper the cave growth many flower trees and
smell nice fragrance and stimulus made the peace of mind of Danghyang Nirartha,
made him stayed overnight for some nights in this place. From the cave we also
can see the beautiful coast of blue ocean and Nusa Penida Island seems as
beautiful background.

HISTORY
- According to the chronicle of Bendesa Mas, it mentions that the elaborations of Mpu Kuturan (a Hindu priest was coming from Java) then he lived in Bali. He has been hosted to visit Silayukti temple at Padang Bai sub district. afterward he also built some other temples and Goa Lawah Temple is one of them.
- According to the Papyrus of Dwijendra Tattwa, it narrates that after Danghyang Nirartha stayed some nights at Goa Lawah, then he built a Kahyangan Temple on the ground. It means that Danghyang Nirartha extended the Palinggih or temple building has been existing before his coming at Goa Lawah Temple.
