Pura Luhur Lempuyang is one of the nine
directional temples in Bali. It is also known as the "Temple of thousand
steps", it is called Temple of thousand steps because to reach the main
temple area, visitors must climb about 1700 steps. The word Lempuyang is
derived from 2 words "Lampu" which means light and "Hyang"
which means God therefore the meaning of Lempuyang is Light of God.
LOCATION
Lempuyang temple is located in sub district of
Abang, Karangasem regency. 1 hour 15 minutes east of Ubud. 2 hours 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport, Kuta, Seminyak, 3 hours from Nusa Dua, 2 hours from Sanur and Denpasar. it was built in mount Lempuyang 1.058 meters above sea
level, northeast of mount Agung. Because of the location in very high position we can see great view from Lempuyang temple.
HISTORY
At the beginning of the creation, when earth was
only 70 years old, the island of Bali was instable; earthquakes happened
everyday for months, torrents rains, with constant lightning and thunders was
the only weather. The god Pacupati, who resides in Mount Sumeru saw this
condition and sent his three children to stabilize the island of Bali. His
three children Hyang Gni Jaya, Hyang Putra Jaya and Dewi Danu came to Bali and
reside in three different places; Dewi Danu resides on Mount Batur, Hyang Putra
Jaya resides on Mount Agung, and Hyang Gni Jaya resides in Lempuyang Luhur.
History Pura Lempuyang also was mentioned has relation to the arrival of Mpu
Kuturan in Bali. Mpu Kuturan teached about Hindhu religion and how to
manufacture and build a temple/parahyangan, and he was also believed to be
involved in making of Pura Lempuyang. Based on this conclusion, Pura Lempuyang existed
since the 10th century during the reign of King Marakata in Bali.
